MaliciousKebab@sh.itjust.worksto Linux@lemmy.ml•Good Nix OS series: five articles for new users.English2·2 years agoIt actually recommends using
nix-env -i
, which is even worse because with that command it searches the whole repository instead of just getting the correct attribute on nixpkgs. It takes half a minute to run the command, it’s insane.

MaliciousKebab@sh.itjust.worksto Android@lemdro.id•The Fairphone 5 is less about what comes in the box and more about what you get over the yearsEnglish2·2 years agoLouis Rossman was very against this idea, and gotta say I side with him on this.
If you really want the latest updates and technologies, you could use openSUSE or plain Arch. I heard Manjaro intentionally delays updates and I think in a rolling release cycle that would hurt the system. No idea about the size of repos on openSUSE but the other features are already there. Also if you think you can spend some more time to learn new things(nix programming language and more) I can recommend you to try NixOS or at least install the package manager( also called nix) on your current system. It is THE distro for reproducible builds. It has a huge repo too, rivaling AUR.
I use Arch btw.
Off topic but that one answer on superuser looks a lot like it was AI generated.

Not to invalidate the problem, it’s just how my experience is with wayland currently.
MaliciousKebab@sh.itjust.worksto Linux@lemmy.ml•It either runs on Linux or refundEnglish1·2 years agoOff topic but your username looks different in my inbox. It says Nate here but in my inbox is says alphapuggle. Btw I’m using eternity for lemmy might be a bug on the app.

Sway and foot work pretty decently. Might want to check them out.
MaliciousKebab@sh.itjust.worksto Linux@lemmy.ml•Distrobox is such a cool utility! Tried it out today and don't see myself switching distros now for a long time :)English16·2 years agoIt’s essentially running a linux container on top of your own system. Which means you can use the toolkit of those distros ( for example the package manager of that system) to install apps from their repos, even gui apps. But those containers also has access to your original filesystem so be careful how you use them. Might want to watch Brodie’s video on it.

MaliciousKebab@sh.itjust.worksto Linux@lemmy.ml•What are the main challenges in Linux adoption for New users, and how can it be addressed?English1·2 years agoGoogling never works for me on windows, I just get redirected to their stupid forums with generic “update your pc” shit, problem solves itself after sometime somehow and I never know what the fuck happened in between. Windows to me is a magical box that sometimes breaks and fixes itself. Wasting my time in the process.
I recommend vesktop, it’s an open source discord client that pretty much fixed all the discord problems that I had on wayland. No need for nitro to stream high resolution, and it’s even compatible with betterdiscord themes 🤌.
