Yeah I agree. I went from Google -> Startpage -> Qwant and I’ve been getting pretty good results honestly. Couldn’t be happier. Only thing bugging me now is them, wanting me to install their browser extension when using Firefox but I just blocked that with uBlock

I mean I get that that freaks you out but as long as I can turn it off I wouldn’t base a buying decision on this. But if the general vibe doesn’t fit then it just doesn’t fit, I get that.

Warning to anyone that thinks about using an external service to sync/back up images. Immich is NOT encrypted. You trust these people to respect your privacy and not get hacked, or you would have to just not care. Ente or Zeitkapsel are fully encrypted and decent alternatives you do not have to host yourself. I personally will self-host but I will never ever trust someone with my private pictures from my camera roll.

Ecosia is worse when it comes to tracking and advertising tho, but their goals are most certainly admirable

Ecosia is actively developing their own search index together with Qwant. They are rolling out French and German results this year actually. AFAIK only like Mojeek and like Swisscow have their own search index (as well as Brave which is US based). But their current search results aren’t really that great which is why I will stick to Qwant.

I also don’t fully trust Brave because of their whole crypto involvement but their search engine is pretty good from experience and definitely much better in terms of privacy than google.

Startpage got bought by System1 in 2019. System1 is an American advertising company. I personally use Qwant for privacy reasons - They’re also in the process of building their own search index together with Ecosia.

I think its easier to switch from generally that to LibreOffice, but the company driving OnlyOffice is russian so I’d prefer a community driven project like LibreOffice tbh.

Honestly, when a road is closed for a weekend at irregular intervals without a schedule in advance its not reasonable to map it. I contribute to OSM from time to time and thought about it as well but the general consensus is to map regular closures or road closures that go on for like more than a month. OSM is a general purpose map and not for mapping road closures as current data will be used long after now on offline navigation gps devices. We would probably need an open street closure map that aggregates all the databases for road closures and interact with osm. For the major ones I know I’ve just been blocking what I know locally to not route through it, as I can’t be bothered in starting a project like that

Honestly, I’d like if the browser could become truly independent from google ad money. Then mozilla devs would have to focus on the browser and come up with a donation program like thunderbird for example instead. I’d prefer to pay and know how the money is used.
